Sit in a comfortable chair with your back straight and your hands on your knees. This simple posture is not very demanding and it will encourage you to breathe more fully.

2) With your eyes gently closed, take a deep breath through your nose. The key to meditation is to concentrate on something so that nothing else will be on your mind. Simply listen to the sound of your breath as you breathe in and out in a slow, rhythmic way.

3) To help yourself breathe more deeply, you can gently clench your hands into a light fist so that your fingers squeeze both your thumbs with a gentle and even pressure. Many people find that they breathe more deeply within minutes after doing this.

4) Do not force yourself to “do” anything, simply listen to your breath and let it displace your other worrying thoughts. To start with, most people have trouble focusing on their breath for more than a few minutes. However, meditation helps your entire body to relax, so you should try to build up to at least ten or fifteen minutes over time.

Stress is a very real and persistent part of many people’s lives. “De-stressing” requires us to have ways to relax body and mind, more than just becoming distracted by something else. Meditation is one of the oldest methods of reducing stress. Set a few minutes aside each day to try it.
