From Doctor To Philanthropist – Dr. Karl Disque And The Disque Foundation

Previously I have written about National Health Care Provider Solutions, a company offering online certification tests for health care workers. I recently sat down with the founder of the company.

Being a doctor seems like an accomplishment enough, but for Dr. Karl Disque, a doctorate degree is just the beginning. A graduate of Des Moines University Medical School, Disque completed his residency at Rush University in Chicago. It was at Rush University that his life would change forever. We were able to catch up with Dr. Disque at a conference in Chicago where he was kind enough to answer some questions about his philanthropic work.

“It was during that time that I realized that there were people in need of medical care who were not getting it,” says Disque who is also the current executive director for The Disque Foundation, a nonprofit organization started by his father John F. Disque. “Haiti was in the news at the time and all I could see were people who were not getting the help that they needed.” This was an inspiration to Disque who stated that the lack of medical professionals in the region accompanied by the millions of those injured is what led him to the decision to donate his time.

Along with 20 others from Rush University Hospital, Disque traveled to Port-Au-Prince where the team performed approximately 50 surgeries and saw close to 1,000 patients per day- a little bit of an influx compared to what they were used to at Rush. “We had a place to sleep, but never used it,” Disque added. “We traveled everywhere from hospitals to remote locations with tent clinics. Any place we could set up a treatment center and help people is where we went.” Disque was one of three anesthesiologists who traveled to the region.

Disque is also an entrepreneur in the medical field. He is the founder of a company called National Health Care Provider Solutions, a company that offers online training and certification for Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Basic Life Support. “All of our courses adhere to the guidelines of the American Heart Association and are created by board certified medical professionals,” adds Disque, who also authored three of the manuals used in the courses. Of course with Disque, it is about how to tie this effort to philanthropy that is most notable. The company donates all of their proceeds to The Disque Foundation to use in their life support education efforts.

In addition to his duties as a board certified physician and practicing anesthesiologist, Disque also spends his time as the CEO of Satori Continuum Inc., a financial investment company. The company invests in numerous industries including property management and small business consulting. And again, Disque mixes in philanthropic efforts with his position. As part of Satori, he serves as managing partner to Brighter Tomorrow LLC, a company that provides housing and educational programs to those who are disabled and mentally challenged.

So what is next for Disque? “I plan to continue the efforts of The Disque Foundation. We have done many things to help others throughout the rest of the world and I firmly believe in fulfilling the purpose of the organization.” Thank you, Dr. Disque for taking the time to speak with us.
